The sporting world has been going through some issues these past few weeks to put it gently. People everywhere have been calling for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s resignation as players are dropping like flies because of all the domestic abuse and assault charges. With the NFL going through hell and scrambling to get everything together, children across the country are watching it all unfold and see their favorite players beating up their wives, girlfriends, or children. It’s important for the younger generation to know though that their are still plenty of good role models to pay attention to in the world of sports such as J.J. Watt, Derek Jeter, and numerous others.
J.J. Watt just might be the most feared defensive threat in football. He’s a relentlessly hard worker and cashed in on that ability with a 6 year, $100 million contract extension with the Houston Texans. This signing has $51.9 million guaranteed which is the a record high for a defensive player and Watt was so overwhelmed with all the money that he googled what rich people buy. It’s humorous to see that Watt is just a regular person woring hard to make a living and who has no idea what to do with all this money he has accumulated. He also hasn’t let the money get to his head because what did he do the morning after he signed his monster contract? He went and worked out at 5 a.m. before practice and he was the first to arrive and the last to leave. Watt hasn’t changed who he is as a person because of all the money and fame, he continues to work as hard as he can to earn every cent and show everyone that he deserves to be where he is today.
Derek Jeter is another sports figure who should be looked up to by every aspiring athlete in the nation. Not enough can be said about Jeter as he is retiring after a long and prestigious 20 year career, but some people from around the league have talked about him as well as some other people who have interviewed him. Those who have been fortunate enough to know him have constantly praised him for his incredible work ethic, the way he carries himself, his leadership, but most impressive of all is his manners. He constantly has been praised for how incredibly nice he is and how he truly is just a normal guy who hasn’t been changed by the way his life turned out. Jeter once said that he loves music and dancing alone, but when he’s with others he’s very shy. That just goes to show that someone can be the face of a franchise and hall of fame player but still be just like you and I.
Across the board, every sport has their shining moments and dull spots. The NBA has their fair share of problems but then there are players like Kevin Durant who gives all the credit for his success to his teammates and mom. He then signed a massive deal to stay with Nike but part of the deal that Nike erected a community center in his hometown in his mother’s name. With so many players letting down fans across the country, it’s refreshing to know that there are players out there working hard, giving back to their communities, and being good role models for the new generation.
